Anger: Our Master or Our Servant

Today's Scripture
People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness. Proverbs 14:29 NLT

Thoughts for Today
Locating the real cause of your anger can help you control it. Ask yourself, "What is it that is making me angry?" Sort out what you caused and what others did to produce the anger. Accept responsibility for your anger and process the information.

Discern the root cause of the problem. If you get angry because the car will not start, is it truly that the car won't startor is it fear of being late and your boss's getting angry at you. Or could it be that you are angry that the car being broken will cause additional financial worry and stress? Over time, you can gain understanding by locating the true cause of your anger and this understanding will help you control it.

Consider this
For further study in this particular step of anger management, you may want to read The Anger Workbook by Dr. Les Carter and Dr. Frank Minirth. This workbook provides valuable help in discerning how a variety of needs (e.g. insecurity, fear, pride, loneliness, inferiority, and unrealistic expectations) can create anger.

Prayer
Father, help me find the real cause of my anger. Give me understanding and, through that understanding, better control of my anger. In Jesus' name

These thoughts were drawn from

Anger: Our Master or Our Servant
by Larry Heath. This study offers a clear explanation of anger, what causes it, and how to recognize when you are sinning with anger. It not only ministers to church members, but serves as a powerful evangelistic tool. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
