Today's Scripture
"'Honor your father and mother. Love your neighbor as yourself.'"Matthew 19:19 NLT

Thoughts for Today
One of the Ten Commandments tells us to honor our father and mother. Jesus re-emphasized the importance of that truth in today's scripture. But how do we apply that teaching when our parents are older and we are responsible for their care?

You may feel frustrated and even angry if your parents seem to rebel against your help and suggestions. Ask God to help you see each situation through your parents' eyes and understand their perspective. Then apply the Golden Rule—if you were in their situation, what would you want your children to do?

Consider this …
As long as your parents are of clear mind and deemed competent, they should have the final say on things. However, if it reaches a point where their minds are not clear, you do have the responsibility to honor them by looking out for their best interests, even if this means going against their desires. Do this with love and respect for them—and don't fall into the guilt trap.

Prayer
Father, help me to keep a right perspective. To be sensitive to my loved ones' feelings. To know when it is in their best interest to intervene. Even when that time comes, help me to do all in an attitude of respect and love. In Jesus' name . . .

Caregiving: Caring for Aging Parents
by Charles Puchta. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide hope and direction to those concerned about the health and well-being of aging parents or an ill spouse or relative. We address predominate issues most families face. Each session is designed to discuss a specific area of concern such as the purpose of a caregiver or end-of-life planning. It will become clear to participants that the Bible provides encouragement and direction to help them through this caregiving journey. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a study for individuals or couples.
