Today's Scripture

"Jesus said to the people who believed in him, 'You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” (John 8:31-32 NLT)

Thoughts for Today

In today's scripture, we learn from Jesus that liberty is available for all who follow him. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6) . . . and he promises the truth will set us free.
Hundreds of years before Jesus walked on earth, Isaiah had prophesied about him in great detail. In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus proclaimed his mission as described by Isaiah so long before.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” (NLT)
Jesus came to set us free! He healed the physically blind—and the spiritually blind. He set captives free—and he still does. Anyone captive to habits, unhealthy relationships, condemnation, substance abuse, fear, insecurity . . . whatever it may be, can find freedom in Jesus.

Consider this …

"If you remain faithful to my teachings . . . the truth will set you free."

Is something in your life holding you captive? Perhaps something that happened in your past? Hurt and unforgiveness? Or something more recent that is controlling your life?

Jesus invites you to come to him. Ask his forgiveness for any wrong. Be faithful to his teachings. Can't do it on your own? He knows that. That's why he is eager to help you. He promises you can to all things through Him (Philippians 4:13). Not some things. All things. You can overcome. You can get past this. You can move on. If you are willing to follow his lead and trust him to love you and help you.

You will know the truth . . . and the truth will set you free.

Prayer

Father, thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to set me free. I've been letting this problem control my life far too long. I really want to be free of it. I've tried my way—and it just doesn't work. I'm ready to do it your way and trust you for freedom. In Jesus' name . . .

Free to Grow: Overcoming Setbacks and Disappointments by Jimmy Ray Lee, D.Min. The purpose of this group study is to help people overcome disappointments and setbacks that have arrested or are presently hindering their emotional and spiritual development. The group study will help participants understand how to be set free so that they can grow and become all that God has designed them to be. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
